Speaker Series: Addressing Algorithmic Bias with Marina Jirotka and Helena Webb

As machine learning techniques grow in prominence and importance, the challenge of algorithmic bias is becoming more urgent. Examples are everywhere - from the Canon digital cameras whose blink detection function was biased against Asian users, to Amazon Alexa and its inability to recognise certain accents. Algorithms are shaped by the biases of the people who create them and the data they are trained on, posing real dilemmas for their application in everyday life.

Prof Marina Jirotka and Dr Helena Webb, Director and Senior Researcher at the UnBias Project at Oxford's Department of Computer Science, join us to unpack the sources of algorithmic bias and the ways in which we can enhance algorithmic accountability.

Speaker Series: Cyber Security and AI with James Pavur

What would an attack against AI look like? Can machine learning outputs be trusted? Are AI and privacy mutually exclusive? This conversation will include a short demonstration of an attack against image classification models and open discussion regarding the implications of AI for privacy and security. Although some of the demos will include code, no programming or stats background is needed.

Non-Technical Training Session

We are excited to announce our first non-technical training session, which will be held at Rhodes House. This will be a non-technical introduction to machine learning, which will cover the crucial concepts, distinctions, and vocabulary needed to understand current debates and developments around AI.
